For quite some time now, I’ve wanted to talk about other things that are meaningful in my life — apart from food — and was not able to find an outlet for it without tying it into, what else? Food! After much thought, I decided to add a “Lifestyles” section to my blog which will include other topics dear to my heart. Of course, food will still be the main focus, but I have other interests besides food — yes, hard to believe.
My first post is the Orange County premiere of Dirty Dancing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts from Feb 3rd to Feb 15th. Anyone who grew up during that time will be extremely familiar with the story of Johnny Castle and Frances “Baby” Houseman, immortalized onscreen by Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. The music is classic and whenever I hear Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes’ (I’ve Had) “The Time of My Life”, it brings me back to a time when life was less stressful and more carefree.
The story is set during the summer of 1963, and 17-year-old Frances “Baby” Houseman is on vacation in New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents. Mesmerized by the racy dance moves and pounding rhythms
she discovers in the resort’s staff quarters, Baby can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle, the resort’s sexy dance instructor. Passions ignite, and Baby’s life changes forever when she is thrown in to the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady, both onstage and off.
