It is quite amazing I’ve never seen Wicked even though the Broadway blockbuster has been around for more than a decade. I’m definitely not missing it this time!
Based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, it is a musical told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz. The plot begins before Dorothy’s arrival and continues through with references to the 1939 film and also the novel.
Wicked tells the story of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda, long before Dorothy arrives in Oz. One is born with emerald-green skin, and is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Both struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace.
Broadway’s biggest blockbuster, will return to Segerstrom Center for the Arts February 17th through March 6th, 2016.
