I have a lunch meeting today (which you will read in another post) so I decide not to leave the confines of my brother’s air-conditioned home to sit in a hole-in-the-wall for breakfast with sweat dripping off my forehead. My sister-in-law’s dad. who is staying here as well while my brother and his family are in Vancouver, makes us his Nanjing-style home cooked breakfast.
I’ve forgotten how spoiled I used to be having an amah (maid) to do all the work for me. It’s been such a luxury having my brother’s amah, An Mei, cook, clear the dishes, do the dishes, do our laundry (and she even irons everything believe it or not, yes, even underwear!) while I relax, read, blog, sleep, do all the things I don’t have time in a day to do back home. I can truly say this is the first REAL vacation I’ve had in almost a decade.
Breakfast consisted of home made “egg pancake” which is a take on scallion pancake. It has more egg than flour so the consistency is more like an omelette rather than pancake and is filled with cheese, more egg and scallions.
Now that the carb and protein are taken care of, we have two refreshing salads. The first is a simple garlic cucumber with just a touch of salt. My son ate it up since he’s a garlic fiend.
The next is a green daikon salad. Green daikon is julienned and then salted and once the liquids have been extracted, it is tossed with sesame oil, a pinch of sugar, and a chopped up bird’s eye chili. I loved it so much I polished off the entire plate!!
So with a hearty breakfast in my stomach I am writing this blog post to kill a little bit of time before heading off to Tsim Sha Tsui East to have DIM SUM. You’ll probably have to wait until tomorrow to read my lunch and dinner entries!

That daikon salad sounds delish! Loving your posts Anita. I need an amah at home too!
