Many months ago, I happen to chance upon Spice and Tulips while waiting for a friend to arrive at Union Market for lunch. I am intrigued by the little shop and am immediately drawn inside. This is when I meet Tarkan and Marissa, owners of this delightful shop. Within a short span of ten minutes, Tarkan has convinced me to take home two of his spice blends to try.
I very quickly use up all the spices and have to come back for more. One day, while lunching with a fellow Dame at The District, I mention I have to stop by Union Market to pick up some spices. Of course, the minute she sees the shop, she can’t resist the temptation to take some spices home with her. I’m not sure why I didn’t think of it, but she mentions that this would make a lovely spot for a Les Dame d’Escoffier event. I immediately organize an event for LDEI this past weekend.
A group of Dames and their guests are treated to a discussion by Tarkan as he takes us on a journey through the various spices and unique spice blends he has created through the years. We hear stories of his childhood in Turkey, and how food plays an intricate part in every aspect of his life. We taste the unique blends on their own as well as on items such as cucumbers and Turkish feta cheese.
If you’re a seasoned cook, or a novice, Tarkan has great ideas for you to make cooking at home easier than ever. I now do not have to blend my own spices to create a flavor profile. All I do is use one blend on my lamb, chicken, or soups.
I highly recommend stopping by Spice and Tulips when you get the chance. You’ll find it is a lot more than just a spice shop!
