Coffee culture is huge in Australia and even more so in Melbourne. Everywhere we go, cafes are filled with people enjoying a perfectly brewed cuppa something special. We stop into The Winey Cow (love the name) for breakfast one morning, and start off with some single origin espresso, cappuccino and latte, while perusing the menu.
My son opt for freshly squeezed orange juice which arrives in a glass bottle, creamy and frothy, packed with a citrusy punch.
Menus are simple in Australia. Almost every café takes advantage of the fresh produce and creates a plate which accentuates the ingredients’ natural flavor profiles rather than mask it with a lot of sauces or toppings.
Avocado Toast (AUD$14.50) comprises an extra thick cut piece of sour grain toast topped with smashed avocado and a choice of topping from five listed. My friend chooses Main Ridge goats curd with roasted pumpkin cubes and pepitas. To bulk up the dish, a side of smoked belly bacon (AUD$5) is added.
Two of us order Eggs on Toast (AUD$11) and there is a myriad of additional sides you may add to your dish. I select salmon (AUD$5) with poached eggs.
Another in our party opts for scrambled eggs (AUD$2 add-on) with smoked belly bacon ($5) a substantial meal, but so very simple.
Of course, my son ventures towards a more substantial offering. The Winey Cow (AUD$24) is a beef dish which changes from time to time. Right now, it consists of braised short rib, manchego bubble and squeak cake, chipotle mayo, buttered broccolini, served with marrow jus on the side. Bubble and squeak is a traditional English dish made with leftover vegetables from a roast dinner fried with potatoes. Here the ingredients are utilized to make a little potato patty, then fried to crispy perfection.
Service is friendly with lots of lovely smiles to go around. We really enjoy this little Mornington Peninsula café and hope to return again one day.
