One of my all time favorite musicals is RENT, based loosely on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème with music, lyrics and book by Jonathan Larson. It is a story of a group of impoverished young artists who develop a friendship in the time of HIV/AIDS while struggling to survive and create a life in New York City’s East Village.
In 2005, it was adapted into a motion picture featuring most of the original cast members including Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs and Jesse L Martin. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world.
Next month, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece RENT 20th Anniversary Tour returns to Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Friday, January 6th-8th, 2017.
