I was in San Diego recently for a radio segment and stopped into City Tacos for a quick bite. These tacos are definitely not traditional, but I honestly don’t care because they’re really good.
The Borrego ($4) is a corn tortilla stuffed with tender pulled lamb with wild mushrooms, cotija cheese, tomato, cilantro and fried leeks topped with a chipotle cream sauce. The tortilla is house-made and stands up to the filling, especially the lamb, which is rather juicy from the braising liquid.
I am always partial to Camaron ($4) as I love shrimp. The sautéed shrimp are coated in a light serrano chile egg batter and topped with grilled calabacitas — mixture of zucchini, bell peppers, onions and corn — drizzled with green tomatillo salsa and a pinch of cilantro and red onions. It definitely hit the spot!
However, the Surf & Turf ($5) blew my mind. The grilled prime rib eye steak is topped with garlic, and chile de arbol sautéed shrimp, with Oaxacan cheese, cabbage, cilantro, onions and avocado. The steak is perfectly executed and packed with flavor. Just as well this was the last taco. Had it been the first taco, its piquancy would have masked the subtlety of the borrego taco.
If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by and grab one of these awesome tacos! They’re pretty damn good.

They recently closed their sister restaurant Tostada’s but I believe they moved some of those yummy tostadas to City Tacos. If you haven’t tried toastadas yet, give it a shot next time! =)
