I’m a little tired of writing about my Hong Kong adventures so I’m going to change it up a bit and return to my remaining HK reviews a little later.
Most Saturdays you can find me at the Irvine Farmers Market at UCI. One of the vendors I love getting my produce from is surprisingly run by the kids who are majoring in the agriculture program at Cal Poly Pomona. They’ve told me about their store located on campus and I vowed to visit one day.
That one day came recently when I was out in the area and decided it was about time I detoured off the highway and took a drive towards the Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch.
The store is not too hard to find. It is off Temple Avenue and there are signs directing you. As I veered into the driveway, I saw the trees and the landscape, where everything was growing and I was excited about finally visiting.
The store features a line of products from the campus farm, orchards, nursery, and apiary. I had expected more of a produce store, but instead, it was more of an upscale market with a deli attached. There are locally and California grown fruits and vegetables, Cal Poly Pomona raised pork and beef products as well as a wide variety of organic, hydroponic and health foods. If you have a garden and like to plant, there is a nursery with herbs, potted foliage and flowering plants, annuals and perennials, and landscape container plants for you to take home and grow.
For me this is not only about getting locally grown produce, but also about supporting the students at Cal Poly and what they are doing. If you aren’t able to get out to Pomona, then stop by one of the various Farmers Markets they sell at — click here for a list.
