daily poke at North Shore Poke Co

April 1, 2013 Mad Hungry Woman 7 Comments

I’ve been to North Shore Poke twice now and am still craving it even as I’m writing this. The concept is simple so this post will be short. There are a handful of different styles of poke on offer, with specials on the board every day.

The restaurant reminds me of how mom and pop shops in Hawaii are — no nonsense, simple and nothing fancy. Funnily, the temperature inside is also on par with how it is on the islands! I prefer sitting outside.

Ahi poke is the norm, but they also have salmon or albacore to choose from. You can swap any of the fish for the choices on the board. Fish is served with white rice, brown rice or on a bed of thinly sliced cucumbers. Every order comes with a small portion of cucumber reminiscent of cucumber sunomono except not as vinegary.

Poke bowls are $8.99 for small and $10.99 for large. There are five different versions to choose from.

I’ve tried several now and I loved them all. If you’re not into spicy, then stick with the milder versions such as Pipeline which is the basic shoyu (soy sauce). Or Sunset which is explained as “secret spicy” but there is only a tinge of it. Waimea is supposedly one of their favorites tossed in a spicy mayo.

One of my favorites is a special, the Kalihi Kine, which is pretty spicy and is a mix of oyster sauce, sriracha and other seasonings. I’ve ordered this a few times and everyone agrees, is the best and most flavorful, that is if you are into spicy.

If you like nachos, the Poke Nachos are pretty damn good. The plate is topped with a spicy mayo poke, scallions, black sesame seeds and then tobiko (flying fish roe) finishes it off. Really delicious and enough to share. We added avocado for an extra charge but definitely worth it for a good mix of textures and flavors.

Fast casual, quick service and absolutely delicious. The only thing I’m not crazy about is their use of plastic “to-go” containers even if you’re dining in.

I’m a huge fan of nachos in any form. I could eat that whole plate…or two!

That is pretty clever. And fits the name well. I love poke salad and will have to try this place out… Someday I’ll make it out to Hawaii to try the real deal.

I’ve always wanted to try Poke after seeing a Poke Stop on Diner, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Now I have one to go see. Thanks
