On my flight over to Hong Kong, I started reading Food Whore by Jessica Tom, a novel which looks at the intricacies of the New York dining scene from the eyes of a newbie. This work of fiction is so easy to read and I found it really difficult to put down.
The story follows Tia Monroe, an NYU graduate student who lands herself an internship at a prestigious New York restaurant. It isn’t the internship she was hoping for, but soon, she is solicited by Michael Saltz, the legendary New York Times food critic to join him in his restaurant visits. Saltz has lost his ability to taste, and uses Tia’s impeccable tastebuds to help him along the way.
Saltz offers Tia immeasurable access to things a college student is unable to afford. She is drawn into the seductive world but slowly comes to realize that Saltz is getting all the credit for her words, her abilities.
I’m not going to ruin it for you, but as someone who is obsessed with food and the culinary scene, this is an extremely delightful read. You’ll find it very difficult to put down!
Food Whore is available from Amazon.
