new Ruby’s Diner in Downey goes high tech + giveaway

March 13, 2017 Mad Hungry Woman 8 Comments

Ruby’s Diner has been a favorite of ours ever since we moved here a little over a decade ago. My son was little then, and he loved going there for its kid-friendly atmosphere and appeal.

The latest Ruby’s Diner opened in Downey several weeks ago, and it is the first to implement a tablet ordering system you and your family can use to maneuver on your own. This diner has an upgraded retro look which goes hand in hand with it going high tech. Of course, if you prefer, a server will be happy to take your order. The system is not hard to maneuver, but it can be daunting for those who aren’t familiar with tablets or electronics.

It’s been a while since we’ve last visited a Ruby’s Diner for dinner, and I noticed that there are new menu items I’ve not tried before.

We start with some Loaded Tots. These crispy, golden brown tater tots are covered with your choice of clam chowder, chili or country gravy — we chose the country gravy. It was a solid comfort food which everyone at the table loved!

Asian Style Lettuce Wraps sounded interesting, and if you’re looking for something lighter, this is the perfect choice. Cubes of chicken breast, sautéed vegetables, crisp wonton strips are served with lettuce cups which you assemble yourself. The accompanying teriyaki sauce is a little too sweet for me, and it quite honestly is great as is.

I was really surprised at how delicious the Very Vegetable Soup was. It reminded me of a home made minestrone soup, but without bits of pasta in it. It is completely vegetarian, which surprised me the most because it was so flavorful.

If you’re looking for a salad, the Chinese Chicken Salad is decent. I ordered sans wonton strips and switched the original Asian dressing for the fat-free sesame ginger dressing. The dressing was light and non-cloying, which was perfect for me.

If you’re like me, your eyes will immediately dart back to the tablet from time to time while dining. I noticed pop up alerts to recommend milkshakes throughout our meal. I started timing them, and they’re coming between two to three minute intervals.

Of course, some of you won’t be able to resist the burgers at Ruby’s Diner, and they have many to choose from. While Super Burger isn’t a traditional burger by any means — it is served on two slices of grilled Parmesan sourdough — it is a melted double Swiss cheese burger topped with lettuce, tomato, RubySauce and sliced avocados.

Sandwiches are also good here. Fresh Roasted Turkey Breast Sandwich is like Thanksgiving all over again. Hand-carved turkey breast slices combine with crisp lettuce, tangy cranberry sauce and creamy mayo stuffed between a soft RubyRoll.

If you’re curious about the new system, stop by the Downey location and check it out. I have a $25 giftcard for one of my readers to WIN this week. Leave me a comment with your full name and tell me why you should win. Entries close on Friday, March 24th, 2017.

That’s awesome, would love the technology to spread over to our local Ruby’s. We love Ruby’s because my kiddos are entertained by train rides over our head, and the food is delish and comfort! Surbhi Kasbaum

Hey there! My family should win because A) we looooove Ruby’s, and B) both my hubs and DS are tech nerds; they would go crazy for the tablet POS! ~ Sarah Whittenberg-Hawe

I’d like to win because I travel a lot throughout Southern California (for my job) and passed several of these restaurants but have never tried them! I’d like to!
