One of the most delicious things we ate this week was the Crab Congee from The Vox Kitchen. Now, I’m a huge fan of this place regardless, but when we saw the congee on Facebook, my friends and I just HAD to try it.
Congee (rice porridge) is my childhood comfort food, and a staple whenever we are sick. The Crab Congee is a decadent rendition of this humble dish, and I doubt I’ll eat it when I’m sick, because it is so rich and amazingly mind-blowing.
At The Vox Kitchen, this simple rice gruel is elevated with rich brown butter. When you get the bowl — and after requisite photos — immediately mix everything together, quickly! The last thing you want is to eat cold congee. All the condiments: jumbo lump crab meat, radish, scallions, enoki mushrooms, pork sung, and egg yolk meld together to create an umami-filled sensation. I also detect hints of fried garlic and furikake on my palate.
The restaurant’s social media continues to taunt us with photos, and suggestions that it won’t remain on the menu for much longer. I hope it stays at least until these cold, wet days are gone.
