authentic Indian at The District

Yellow Chilli at The District in Tustin is serving up some mighty tasty Indian fare. Behind this concept is Indian celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, who travels extensively throughout India to gather knowledge and incorporating them onto his  menus the world over.

My friend and I visited on a weekend for a late lunch. The restaurant was still packed, with families and couples, and the aromas wafting through the air was incredible. The restaurant itself is decorated in whimsical colors of bright yellow and azure, and offered a full bar at your disposal.

We started with some appetizers. Tandoori Lamb Chops ($24.99) were enveloped in a thick coating of spices which not only tenderized the meat, but also, gave it bold, hearty flavors which we enjoyed tremendously.

Pudina Murgh Tikka ($16.99) were chunks of grilled white chicken served with a refreshing, bright mint sauce. The chicken is so juicy and tender, and you’ll want to ask for more mint sauce because it’s just SO good.

Our main entrees included Butter Chicken ($16.99) consisting of moist chicken pieces bathed in a rich buttery makhni sauce which traditionally, included ingredients such as tomatoes, yogurt, cashews, ginger, and garlic among others.

We were trying to decide between fish or shrimp, but our server recommended Kadai Jheenga ($20.99) a shrimp curry with bell peppers and aromatic spices. It was absolutely delicious and super flavorful over basmati rice.

I was in the mood for dal, and once again, our server’s suggestion of Lalla Mussa Dal ($14.99) was spot on. The black lentils are slow simmered overnight and taste so much more intense just regular chickpea or yellow lentil dal.

Of course, we can’t leave without ordering Garlic Naan ($3.99) and the one here is stellar. I loved dipping the bread in all the different sauces, and interspersing between that and the basmati rice.

It was super busy on the day of our visit, so service was off. I’m hoping to return again soon for the delicious food, and hopefully, will experience better service on my next visit.
