I’ve been pretty much sheltering in place since mid-March. I do this because I am in the high risk category, and I am doing my best to keep safe and healthy. Being at home means I’ve pretty much been cooking my own meals (which has been awesome) and getting take-out every so often.

I’m still uncomfortable about dining at a restaurant, even if it is outdoors. I have, however, been watching restaurants, and their efforts in creating outdoor, socially distanced environments for diners. Once I am comfortable enough, I will be reporting on it. For now, I’ve had mostly good experiences doing curbside pick-up.

One of the places we have been getting take-out from is Champagnes Bistro & Deli in Newport Beach. We always get their salads, and boy do they have great salads!

One of my favorites is the Greek Salad ($11.50) with crunchy cucumbers, olives, feta cheese, and other delicious ingredients. Best part is, you can assemble it when you’re ready to eat, so it stays crisp and fresh.

Another is the “Farm-acy” Superfood Salad ($14.50) and is packed with beautiful fruits such as blueberries, strawberries, dotted with savory blue cheese, and served with a house-made orange champagne vinaigrette.

My son is a fan of Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad ($11.50) and the version here is solid. The portions are substantial and suffices as a meal, or to share as a side for two or three.

If you’re wanting something more, the pizzas are popular with kids. I enjoyed the Hearth Roasted Veggie Pizza ($12.95/$16.99) with brightly hued veggies such as zucchini, yellow squash, peppers, and basil.

Service is always friendly and efficient, and while we don’t go out much, we can always support our local, family-owned businesses whenever possible.

Champagnes has been my go-to place during the pandemic too. Love their salads and sandwiches, and the pizza is legit! Their passion fruit ice tea is addicting! What impresses me the most is their diligence at sanitizing the restaurant and ensuring social distancing. additionally, during that brief period when restaurants were open for sit down diners, I found that the Irvine Islands Restaurant (on Barranca) was exceptionally diligent about health safety as well! Kudos to both restaurants for practicing safety measures to protect us!
